About BuildFormulas
Free online calculators built by a specialized editorial team and reviewed by domain-specific advisory boards to ensure accuracy, clarity, and actionable insights for professionals and DIY enthusiasts alike.
Our Mission
BuildFormulas was founded in 2024 with a clear mission: to provide free, accurate, and genuinely useful calculators that help people make informed decisions in construction, finance, fitness, and business. We recognized that most calculator websites fall into one of two traps — either they are ad-stuffed pages with shallow content designed purely for search traffic, or they are expensive professional tools locked behind paywalls.
We chose a different path. Every calculator on BuildFormulas is built around three principles:
- Accuracy first — Every formula is verified against industry standards, peer-reviewed research, or regulatory guidance before publication
- Context matters — A number without context is just a number. We pair every calculator with educational content, real-world case studies, and practical guidance so you understand what the result means
- Respect for the user — No registration walls, no data harvesting, no dark patterns. The tool works the moment you land on the page
The BuildFormulas Editorial Team
All content on BuildFormulas is created and maintained by our in-house Editorial Team — a group of writers, analysts, and researchers who specialize in translating complex calculations into clear, practical tools. Rather than attributing articles to individual bylines that may be difficult to verify, we publish under the BuildFormulas Editorial Team name to reflect the collaborative nature of our work.
Every piece of content passes through at least two stages of review: an initial editorial review for clarity and structure, followed by a domain-specific technical review by the relevant advisory board. This two-tier system ensures that both the writing quality and the underlying calculations meet our standards before anything is published.
Our Internal Review Boards
To maintain technical accuracy across very different domains, our editorial team is organized into four specialized internal review boards. Each board is an internal editorial team within BuildFormulas — not an external independent advisory body — and is responsible for referencing the formulas, assumptions, and educational content within its area of expertise against publicly available industry standards.
Note: Our review boards reference standards from professional organizations and regulatory bodies. They are not composed of licensed professionals and do not provide professional advice. For decisions requiring licensed expertise, consult a qualified professional.
Financial Review Board
Mortgage, loans, taxes, retirement, investment, and personal finance calculators
The Financial Review Board is our internal editorial team that oversees all financial calculators on BuildFormulas. Team members reference standards from financial planning, lending, taxation, and investment analysis literature. They verify that our amortization schedules, compound interest projections, tax estimates, and retirement models align with publicly documented U.S. financial regulations and standard industry formulas.
What they review: Amortization formula accuracy, APR vs. interest rate distinctions, PMI calculation logic, tax bracket data, retirement withdrawal models (including the 4% rule and sequence-of-returns considerations), and debt payoff strategies. They also ensure our content reflects current Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) guidance and IRS publications.
Standards referenced: CFPB Loan Estimate disclosure rules, IRS Publication 17 (Federal Income Tax), Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Market Survey, and standard actuarial formulas for amortizing loans.
Construction Engineering Panel
Concrete, roofing, lumber, drywall, insulation, masonry, and all building material calculators
The Construction Engineering Panel is our internal editorial team that reviews every calculator related to building materials, structural estimation, and construction project planning. Team members reference field practice from general contracting, civil engineering, and construction estimation literature. They verify that our material calculations account for real-world factors like waste percentages, compaction factors, and regional material variations.
What they review: Concrete volume formulas (including bag yield rates and cubic yard conversions), roofing square calculations, lumber board-foot calculations, drywall sheet estimation, insulation R-value coverage, rebar spacing logic, and excavation volume estimates. They also confirm that waste factor recommendations align with common contractor practices.
Standards referenced: Portland Cement Association (PCA) concrete mix guidelines, American Concrete Institute (ACI) standards, International Residential Code (IRC) span tables, and National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) guidelines.
Health & Fitness Advisory
TDEE, BMR, BMI, body fat, macro, calorie, heart rate, and water intake calculators
The Health & Fitness Advisory is our internal editorial team that reviews all health-related calculators to ensure they are grounded in peer-reviewed clinical research and responsibly framed. Team members reference standards from registered dietitians and exercise science professionals to verify that our formulas reflect current evidence and that our guidance avoids making medical claims.
What they review: Mifflin-St Jeor and Harris-Benedict BMR equations, activity multiplier validation, BMI classification thresholds (WHO standards), body fat percentage formulas (U.S. Navy method), macronutrient ratio guidance, heart rate zone calculations (Karvonen formula), and hydration recommendations. They also review all health-related content to ensure it includes appropriate disclaimers and does not substitute for professional medical advice.
Standards referenced: World Health Organization (WHO) BMI classifications, American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) position stands, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics evidence analysis, and the Mifflin-St Jeor equation published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Editorial Review Board
General calculators, date/time tools, business, e-commerce, and cross-domain content
The Editorial Review Board is our internal editorial team that handles calculators which fall outside the three specialized domains above, including business metrics (profit margin, ROI, break-even), e-commerce tools (FBA fees, shipping costs), date and time calculators, and utility tools. Team members verify formula accuracy, check that business calculations reflect current fee structures and tax rules, and ensure consistency with our broader editorial standards.
What they review: Amazon FBA fee schedules (updated annually), shipping cost models, profit margin and markup formulas, break-even analysis, ROI calculations, date arithmetic logic, and unit conversions. They also monitor third-party fee structures for accuracy and update calculators when pricing changes occur.
Our Editorial Process
Every calculator and article on BuildFormulas follows a standardized editorial workflow before it is published:
- Research & Formula Selection
The Editorial Team researches the topic, identifies the standard formula or methodology used by industry professionals, and documents the sources. For financial calculators, this means referencing CFPB or IRS guidance. For construction, we consult ACI or IRC standards. For fitness, we rely on peer-reviewed clinical research.
- Calculator Development
The calculator is built with the selected formula, including input validation, edge case handling (such as zero-interest loans or extreme values), and clear result formatting. We test against known examples to confirm the output matches expected results.
- Technical Review
The relevant review board examines the formula implementation, input assumptions, and any educational content for accuracy. They may request changes to calculation logic, add caveats, or flag scenarios where the calculator's results should include additional context.
- Editorial Review
The content is reviewed for clarity, readability, and completeness. This includes verifying that explanations are accessible to non-experts, that case studies are realistic, and that FAQ sections address common user questions.
- Publication & Ongoing Maintenance
After publication, calculators are reviewed periodically — at least annually, or sooner if underlying regulations, fee structures, or industry standards change. Each page displays a "Last updated" date so users know when the content was most recently reviewed.
Accuracy & Methodology
Our calculators use industry-standard formulas and engineering principles. We document the methodology behind each calculator on its respective page, including the formula used, key assumptions, and limitations. Examples include:
- Construction calculators use formulas from the Portland Cement Association and American Concrete Institute (ACI) standards, with waste factors based on common contractor practice
- Financial calculators use standard amortization formulas (M = P[r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1]), IRS tax brackets, and CFPB-compliant disclosure language
- Fitness calculators use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation for BMR, WHO classifications for BMI, and the Karvonen formula for heart rate zones
- Business calculators use current Amazon FBA fee schedules and standard accounting formulas for margin, markup, and break-even analysis
While we strive for accuracy, our calculators provide estimates and should be used as a starting point for decision-making. For critical financial, structural, or medical decisions, always consult with a qualified licensed professional.
What Makes Us Different
Unlike many calculator websites that prioritize ad revenue over user experience, BuildFormulas is built around the calculator itself:
- No registration required — Open any calculator and start using it immediately
- No data collection — All calculations happen in your browser. We do not store your inputs or results
- Transparent methodology — Every calculator page explains the formula used and cites its sources
- Real-world context — Each calculator includes case studies, educational content, and FAQs so you understand how to apply the result
- Reviewed content — Every page is reviewed by a domain-specific board, not just published and forgotten
- Regular updates — We monitor for changes in regulations, fee structures, and industry standards, and update calculators accordingly
